KOHO is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, cultural, non-profit arts organization developed for and by artists & creators, in the heart of San Francisco’s Japantown.

KOHO welcomes all visitors near and far, and serves as a beacon for Japanese & Japanese-Americans to return to Japantown to reconnect with authentic culture and community, and preserve and revitalize San Francisco Japantown for many future generations to come.

San Francisco Japantown was formed in its current location in after the 1906 earthquake, and is the oldest and one of only three left in the nation.

  • Destination Nihonmachi

    Sat, 10/26/24 - 5-10p: KOHO invites you to DESTINATION NIHONMACHI, KOHO's Art and Culture Crawl, on Saturday, October 26, 2024 in Japantown. The event will take place along the Japantown merchant corridor on Post Street between Laguna and Webster.

    DESTINATION NIHONMACHI, a night in SF Japantown, is designed to support the merchant corridor and entrepreneurs with revenue opportunities, and provide an immersive experience of authenticity and discovery for our Japantown community, our displaced families, and visitors from San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

  • BonPOP 2024

    BonPOP 2024

    8/31/24 - The third annual KOHO BonPop community Bon Odori festival will take place on August 31 at the Celebration Garden in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. BonPOP is a reimagined Obon Odori event welcoming a citywide and regional audience, the Japantown community, as well as tourists and the general public to experience and immerse themselves in the Japanese tradition of honoring ancestors through dance, song and rituals welcoming all regardless of religion, faith, ethnicity, and cultural beliefs.

  • A Love Letter to J-Town: Stories of Resilience

    Sat, 8/10/24 - 3-5p: We are SO excited to announce that KOHO is partnering with REALSOUL, Ryan Takemiya, and the National Japanese American Historical Society on our storytelling event, “A Love Letter to J-Town: Stories of Resilience.” 💕 Through the different storytellers and vendors, we aim to educate people about redevelopment and gentrification in San Francisco Japantown

  • Open House

    Sun, 3/10 11a-4p and Tue 3/12 11a-2p! KOHO has the honor of stewarding 1675 Post Street as a community gathering space for the SF Japantown Community in partnership between Japantown Task Force/Japantown Cultural District. Come take a sneak peek and learn more about what we’re up to and provide your thoughts on how this amazing community space should be utilized! A hot curry lunch will be served at noon!

  • KOHO Japantown Film Festival

    3/16/24 - Rain Delay from November, KOHO’s first Film Festival is really happening! This year, it will take place in Japantown on Saturday March 16, 2023 from 12:00 - 5:00 pm on the Peace Plaza.

    Three films, all produced by stakeholders in our community, will focus on the Japanese-American experience today; the influences of historical trauma, resilience and strength of generations, and the search for cultural identity in purpose, place and community.
